Getting the planting right makes all the difference. Follow these steps to give your tree the best possible foundation.
1. Choose the Right Spot
- Make sure the tree has the appropriate sunlight for its variety
- Check for enough space for mature height and width
- Avoid low spots with standing water or heavily compacted soil
- Call 811 before at least two full days before you dig to arrange to have utility lines marked
2. Dig the Hole
- Dig a hole 2–3 inches wider than the root ball
- Depth should be no deeper than the root ball
- The top of the root ball should sit slightly above ground level
3. Prepare the Tree
- Gently remove the container or loosen burlap and twine
- Cut away any visible circling roots (common in container trees)
- Handle the tree by the root ball—not the trunk
4. Set the Tree in Place
- Place the tree in the hole and check that it’s straight from all angles
- The root flare (where the trunk widens at the base) should be visible and just above soil level
5. Backfill the Hole
- Use the existing soil—no need for heavy amendments
- Fill in gradually, lightly tamping to remove air pockets
- Do not pack soil too tightly
6. Water Thoroughly
- Water deeply right after planting
- This helps settle soil and eliminates air pockets around roots
7. Mulch
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch in a wide ring
- Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk (no mulch “volcano”)
8. Stake (If Needed)
- Stake if the tree is unstable or in a windy area
- Remove stakes within 6–12 months
That’s it. A properly planted tree is already halfway to success.
